Shane Lowry is beloved in Ireland and Northern Ireland. That love really catapulted when he won The Open Championship back in 2019 right at Royal Portrush. They appreciate him so much that he got his own mural celebrated his incredible accomplishment and it shows him holding the Claret Jug.
However, Shane is also one of the more expressive personalities in golf, and when you have a personality like that, you’re bound to maybe put on a pirate hat and eye patch and start cursing like a sailor. OK, not every big personality swears but the Irishman is one who is not afraid to let it fly.
During The Open at Royal Portrush, the same place where Lowry won his 2019 Open in dominant fashion for his only major to date, he let the iconic links course know how he felt about it after an errant tee shot.
Go ahead and take a gander:
Dropping F bombs after bad shots is very common in golf but incredibly, Shane used the same “F*ck this place” reference at three of the four majors this year. Once at the PGA Championship, once at the US Open, and now at The Open.
This led to a hilarious tweet from Austin Spain of The Fried Egg sighting that Lowry will have his sights on the Grand Slam of “F*ck This Place” references.
I’ve seen folks say they’ll simply call it the “Lowry Slam” if says the same thing at The Masters in 2026. What makes this amazing is that when you say things in anger and frustration, stuff just flies out of your mouth sometimes in the heat of the moment, where you don’t realize what you said until after you said it.
It’s not like you already have it planned out. So the fact that he said the same exact thing, word for word, bar for bar at Quail Hollow, Oakmont, and Portrush is hilarious. Even the way he says it basically sounds the same. It’s one of those things that’s relatable in that, many of us have cursed on a golf course. Maybe we didn’t curse the course itself but we have sworn in frustration.
It’ll be interesting to see if he completes the Lowry Slam next April at Augusta.
