Shane Lowry is considered one of the best golfers in the sport today. Notching seven wins worldwide, including three on the PGA Tour, while also having top-5 finishes in every major, will earn you that level of respect. But, of course, his greatest achievement was winning The Open Championship in dominating fashion in 2019 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
It was a magical moment for the Irishman. Yes, Ireland and Northern Ireland are different countries, but there’s still a lot of respect between the two places, and the Northern Ireland fans at Portrush gave Shane plenty of love. It was also the first time The Open was at the legendary links since the 1950s, so it was like a perfect ending considering an Irishman pulled it out.
Now, The Open is back at Portrush once again, and one thing that’s gone viral is a beautiful mural of Lowry holding the Claret Jug and is now a tourist attraction for golf fans.

It’s always really cool when you see murals celebrating sports moments, and it’s amazing artistry by very talented artists to be able to take the time to make these murals on buildings and walls. And it’s also a testament to how passionate Ireland and Northern Ireland are about the great sport of golf, as well.
Also, just the passion for The Open runs deep in a lot of countries. It’s the Super Bowl of golf for tons of golf fans outside of the United States. I’ve always felt like it’s the most important major championship as a US citizen (sorry, Masters). Its history is incredibly rich, the courses are breathtaking, the trophy is amazing, and so on.
And we’ll see more of that passion unfold as The Open at Royal Portrush is currently underway at the time of this writing. Perhaps we’ll see a fresh new mural created for the winner of this Open Championship? In the meantime, seeing this one is a cool moment for Shane.
