Rory McIlroy is always making headlines because he’s one of the greatest golfers of all time, so it makes sense. And he’s truly solidified his place among the upper echelon of golf with a historic, unforgettable grand slam victory at The Masters, where the playoff with Justin Rose was a golf instant classic.
However, Rory found himself in one of the more bizarre situations in his decorated 18-year career as a professional golfer, and it came at The Open at the legendary Royal Portrush in his home country of Northern Ireland. So, Rory found himself in a pickle, having to hit a shot from Portrush’s tall grass.
Like normal, the 2014 Open Championship winner took his swing and hit his ball. However, as he hit his ball, another golf ball popped out of the grass, and this initially caused a little confusion with some thinking the mystery ball was McIlroy’s, but instead, it was a lost ball freeing itself from the shackles of the grass thanks to Rory’s swing.
Take a look at the mesmerizing clip below.
And one fan was able to find the ball and show us what brand it was. It was a Top Flite, and it immediately brought a smile to my face because my very first set of clubs were Top Flites (I still have and sometimes use the putter).
Now, I know folks poke fun at TopFlite, but I enjoyed those clubs, dang it, and their golf balls (slams fist on desk)! But nah, what’s the chances of that happening, right? Yes, there are lost golf balls all over golf courses, but still, the chance of you hitting your own golf ball that’s sitting on top of another is very slim.
As for the fan who found the ball, he has himself a nice memento coming from one of the world’s premier golf courses at golf oldest major. That’s a heck of a souvenir, to say the least. It would be cool to get that ball if it was hit by any pro golfer let alone the dude who just completed the career grand slam a few months ago. Truly amazing.
