Jason Day has put together a highly decorated career that features 13 PGA Tour victories, including a major when he won the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. Thanks to that stretch, Day has become a fan favorite and among the most recognized players on Tour.
Since coming to the United States from Austrailia, the 37-year-old has developed a big interest in the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL. He’s been seen attending games in the past. But there was something shocking that he mentioned in regards to his fandom when asked about it this week at the US Open and Oakmont.
When asked about his favorite NFL teams, Jason stated that he was a fan of the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. Uh oh. If you’re an NFL fan, then you know that the Browns and Steelers have one of the most heated and historic rivalries in the NFL.
To Jason’s credit, he did admit he was going to catch some flak for saying that.
I will say, it could always be worse, believe it or not. What if he said he was a Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers fan? As a Bears fan myself (a suffering one at that; Send help), I know how shocking that would be, not only to NFL fans but to American sports fans in general.
That being said, Steelers and Browns are not far off from that. Aside from Bears-Packers, it’s arguably the most notable rivalry in the NFL. Reading some of the comments has been hilarious, though, because many Browns took note of the fact that Jason mentioned the Browns first, meaning that they’re his “true” favorite team. Man, how can you not love sports rivalries?
